An unexpected pleasure was the presence of Dr Annie Besant, looking like a priestess in her white, gold-embroidered robe, who spoke proudly of the fact that Indian men had enfranchised their sisters and now gave them high official positions.²⁰

She was now the ‘grand dame of India’, and an Indian nationalist praised by Gandhi. She was also the leader of World Theosophy, which most of the British obituaries had difficulty understanding. She had recently announced the arrival of a new world messiah and believed that she would be reincarnated. She was cremated on a sandalwood pyre at sunrise on the day after her death in 1933.

When she died, only the Labour and radical feminist media remembered her earlier work. Many of the battles had been forgotten because they had most been won. With the rights of Trade Unions, women and nonbelievers mostly settled, she was lauded for the fight for free speech and the fight for the right to assemble. Her long, long life and her legacy were not able to be summarized adequately – that, paradoxically, was her legacy.
